JACKSONVILLE – Freshman Polina Ramenskaja made history for Jacksonville State women's tennis on Wednesday evening when she earned the program's first-ever ASUN Conference Player of the Week award.
 
"It's great to see our first women's player in program history winning ASUN Player of the Week," Jacksonville State head coach Mike Mucci said. "Polina has been consistently getting better each day this Spring and she's coming into some very good form. She is extremely talented, and it'll be exciting to see how she continues to progress through the year."
 
The Narva, Estonia, native claimed the honor after scoring a massive victory last week in Starkville, Miss. Although the Gamecocks fell, 4-3, to Mississippi State, Ramenskaja defeated 61^st-ranked Maria Rizzolo 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, in the no. 5 singles match, to remain undefeated in singles play. She also clinched the doubles point against the Bulldogs alongside classmate Irene Artigas with a 6-4 win on Court 2.
 
Ramenskaja started her college career with a 6-0, 6-2, win in singles competition at Tennessee State on Jan. 15. The standout freshman is still unbeaten in one-on-one play after tallying a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, victory versus Lee in the no. 3 singles flight on Wednesday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
 
Polina and the Gamecocks return to action this weekend with a pair of road tests in Mississippi. Jacksonville State's women play at Alcorn State on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m., then head to Jackson State the following day for an 11 a.m. start-time.
