Gamecocks Go Low In Final Round of White Sands Bahamas

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – All five players in Jacksonville State's lineup shot under par in their final round of the fall season on Sunday, when the Gamecocks finished fifth at the White Sands Bahamas NCAA Golf Invitational.

Led once again by senior Erik Jannson, who finished tied for fourth, Jax State played its best golf of the three-day tournament in Sunday's final round. The Gamecocks shot a 17-under 271 over the final 18 holes to turn in a 54-hole score of 844 (-20).

The Gamecocks' final-round 271 tied for the fifth-lowest round in school history, while the 17-under score on Sunday tied for the fourth-lowest round vs. par by a Jax State team. Junior Santiago Bailleres had the team's best round on Sunday with a 6-under 66, while junior Ryley Heath fired a 4-under 68, senior Isaac MacNaughton signed for a 3-under 69 and junior Gabriel Restrepo shot a 2-under 70.

Jansson kept his streak of rounds at par or better alive, carding an opening-round 69 on Friday before back-to-back rounds of 68 over the weekend capped his weekend on the par-72, 7,159-yard Ocean Course at the Ocean Club. The native of Vasteras, Sweden, tie for fourth at 11-under in the field of 56 players.

The three rounds under par closed a fall season that saw Jansson shoot every round at par or better. He signed for a round under par 14 times in his 15 fall rounds, shooting even in the other. His fall scoring average finishes at 68.87 over 15 rounds, and he drops his career scoring average to 71.79, ahead of Danny Willett's school record of 71.96 set from 2005-07. He also runs his career total for par or better rounds to 50, fourth-most by a player in Jax State history.

Jansson used a solid approach game to feast on the Ocean Course's par-three holes. He shot 3-under on those holes over three days, the best score among all players in the field. He was 5-under on the par-four holes and 3-under on the par fives. He made either par or birdie on 48 of his 54 holes in the event and also added an eagle on the 306-yard par-4 17th hole in Saturday's second round.

Bailleres finished the three-day event with a 6-under 210 and jumped 14 spots on the individual leaderboard to finish 17th. The Chascomus, Argentina, native's scorecard had eight birdies on it on Sunday, capping a weekend that saw him open play with a 68 on Friday before bouncing back after a second-round 76 on Saturday.

MacNaughton finished one spot behind Bailleres in a tie for 18th after carding a 54-hole score of 211 (-5). The Truro, Nova Scotia, native shared the lead after a 66 in Friday's first round and then rallied on Sunday after a Saturday 76. MacNaughton and Bailleres took advantage of the par-five holes at the Ocean Club, each playing them at 6-under over the tournament.

Heath saved his best golf for the final round on Sunday, using seven birdies en route to his 4-under 68. It allowed the Decatur, Ala., native to bounce back after two rounds of 76 that opened the tournament and gave him a 4-over 220 for the tournament that tied him for 47th.

Restrepo improved every day in the tournament, opening with a 77 before a second-round 74 and his final-round 70. The Caracas, Venezuela, native made five birdies on Sunday, including three-straight to set the tone early in the round.

The finish concludes the fall portion of the Gamecocks' fall schedule. They will turn their focus towards preparing for the spring, which will open on Feb. 19-20 at the World Golf Village Collegiate in St. Augustine, Fla.
