HARLINGEN, Texas – A pair of Gamecocks will head to the Lone Star State this week to compete in a prestigious ITF Futures invite. Senior Ivan Marrero Curbelo and sophomore Alin Fatu are set for battle in the International Tennis Federation's M25 event at the Harlingen Country Club.
"I want to see them trusting their training and preparation that we've been putting in this semester on a daily basis," assistant coach Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto said. "I've seen how hard these guys are working every day. I think they feel ready coming into this tournament, and it's a great opportunity for them in Texas playing our first pro event of the Fall."
Marrero Curbelo, a transfer from Saint Leo, and Fatu, a second-year Jacksonville State men's tennis standout from Bucharest, Romania, have both impressed this Fall. They traveled to Athens, Ga., earlier this month and shined at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Marrero Curbelo made a run to the Red Draw's Semifinal Round while Fatu added a couple of singles triumphs over competitors from Mercer and Vanderbilt. Both participated in the ITA Fall Regionals a week ago at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center as well. Fatu scored a qualification win and Marrero Curbelo advanced to the Final 8 in singles action.
This week's event is the first of three scheduled ITF Futures events for Jax State this Fall. They are also slated to take part in invites in Fayetteville, Ark. (Oct. 30-Nov. 5) and Winston-Salem, N.C. (Nov. 6-12).
Live scoring will be available beginning on Tuesday in the M25 Harlingen Country Club Pro Circuit. Marrero Curbelo, the fourth overall seed, will start at 9 a.m. Monday against Edgar Destouet of France. Fatu will meet No. 8 Brayden Michna, a freshman from Texas A&M, later in the day.
