JONESBORO, Ark. – Senior
Erik Jansson played the Arkansas State Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate at 16-under par to claim his first outright collegiate win on Tuesday.
Jansson torched the par-72, 6,565-yard RidgePointe Country Club over the two-day tournament, carding rounds of 65-68-67 to win the 88-player event by one shot over Memphis' Esteban Vazquez. The finish led Jax State to claim third-place out of 16 teams with a 30-under 834.
A native of Vasteras, Sweden, Jansson claimed his second career win but his first outright collegiate victory. He tied for first at the Sea Palms Invitational last season. His 54-hole score of 200 this week tied his career-best and tied himself for the third-lowest 54-hole score in Jax State history. The Gamecocks' 834 tied for the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in school history.
"I am very proud of Erik for his hard work and determination," head coach
Michael Brice said. "He wanted this win and went and got it. He is a great example to the rest of the team."
Jansson led the field in both par-3 and par-4 scoring during the tournament. He played RidgePointe's par-three holes at 4-under and the par-four holes at 7-under. He made 19 total birdies, which were second in the field, and only made three bogeys during the event. He posted a bogey-free final round on Tuesday.
"We entered this week with some momentum and we knew that we would have a good chance to bring it home this week," Jansson said. "We fought hard out there but we fell against a strong home team in Arkansas State. And in the end Memphis made a great run the final day to beat us by a few strokes. I was very happy to cap off my first collegiate win after an exciting finish where I managed to make a big putt for birdie on 16 and then par the last two holes to win by one."
Jansson was joined in the Top 10 by fellow senior
Isaac MacNaughton, who tied for ninth with a 7-under 209. MacNaughton, a native of Truro, Nova Scotia, signed for three rounds under par, opening with scores of 71 and 67 on Monday before posting a final-round 71.
MacNaughton feasted on the par-fives over his three rounds, playing those at 6-under. He made Jax State's lone eagle of the tournament in Monday's second round, driving the 298-yard eighth hole and putting in from 10-feet out for a two.
