JACKSONVILLE – A busy Fall comes to a close this week for Jacksonville State men's tennis as the program wraps up their 2023 slate with a pair of invites. Four Gamecocks will head to Florence, Ala., for the North Alabama Invitational while Ivan Marrero Curbelo travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take part in another ITF Futures event.
"We're looking forward to compete at UNA to finish out our Fall slate, along with one of our guys heading to the Wake Forest 15K," head coach Trey Morris said. "We're excited to continue fighting and hopefully finish the Fall the right way in these next two events."
Seniors Vanja Dobrnjac and Liam Day, junior Logan Haga, and freshman Aman Dahiya will each be in action in northwest Alabama this weekend at the North Alabama Invitational. Those Gamecocks will again meet their in-state foe as well as competitors from across the southeast after duking it out with the Lions in Fall matches at the Jax State Invite (Sept. 15-17), Samford Invitational (Sept. 29-Oct. 1), and the recent Country Club of Birmingham Invite (Oct. 28-30).
"I want us to go into Florence with the same mentality that we always talk about, which is competing for championships," Morris said. "I believe we have the guys to do just that. They've been working extremely hard this week and I'm pumped to see what their results are."
Saint Leo transfer Ivan Marrero Curbelo has burst onto the scene this Fall for the Red-and-White after a trio of dominant tournament appearances. He proved his quality in late September at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships after advancing to the semifinal round of his singles draw and the finals of his doubles draw alongside Lucius Soller. The Las Palmas, Spain, native won two main draw matches at ITA Regionals in Auburn, then made a run all the way to the semifinals in singles and doubles play at the ITF Futures Harlingen M25 last week in Texas.
Following those big performances, the new Gamecock will try for one final Fall highlight as he makes the trip to the Land of the Pines.
"It's a similar mindset for Ivan as he goes to Winston-Salem," Morris said. "We have to take it match-by-match, of course, but ultimately we're looking to empty the tank and give it all we've got in the pursuit of hardware."
The North Alabama Invitational will be held Friday through Sunday. The ITF Futures Wake Forest 15K starts Mon., Nov. 6, and concludes Sun., Nov. 12.
Jax State's men will continue training throughout the Fall semester until the regular season kicks off in January. The Spring 2024 campaign will usher in a new era of men's tennis in Jacksonville, as the program enters its first regular season under Morris and its first as a member of Conference USA.
