Jacksonville State Set for Battle at Furman

JACKSONVILLE – After splitting last week's matches, Jacksonville State men's tennis returns to the court for a single road match this weekend. The Gamecocks head east on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. CT tilt at Furman.
"Furman is always dangerous and well-coached," Jacksonville State men's tennis associate head coach Trey Morris said. "We are excited for an opportunity to head to Greenville and battle on Saturday."
Jax State (4-2) scored another impressive win at home last Saturday, posting a quick 6-1 win over Young Harris. Each of the three Gamecock tandems were victorious in doubles play, and two-set singles triumphs by Konstantin Benneman, Vanja Dobrnjac, Logan Haga, Xavier Sarda Marti, and Lucius Soller solidified the non-conference win over the Mountain Lions.
Sunday's match at Alabama did not go as positively. The Crimson Tide rebounded from a 7-0 loss to 19th-ranked Columbia earlier in the day with a sweep victory over Jax State. The Gamecocks were simply outmatched by a veteran UA squad, but there were still bright spots from that outing in Tuscaloosa. Benneman and Alin Fatu were leading 5-3 on court three before the Tide claimed wins in the no. 1 and no. 2 doubles flights. In addition, Sarda Marti forced a tiebreaker in the first set of his 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, loss against Alabama's no. 3 singles competitor.
"We know there are some things we need to improve on coming off this past weekend," Morris said. "IF we do those things, we will give ourselves opportunities in the match to seize victory."
Despite a disappointing day at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility, Jacksonville State's men will look for a bounce-back against the Paladins (2-4).
Furman has faced a gauntlet thus far in non-conference play, suffering losses to men's tennis powers Clemson, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, and Tulane. Their only victories of the spring came in shutout fashion in a Jan. 28 doubleheader against Belmont Abbey.
Saturday's match at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C., will start at 1 p.m. CT. Links to follow along with live stats will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
