JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State men's tennis will head south on Saturday for non-conference matches against a longtime rival. The Gamecocks will play at Troy this weekend, with men's action starting at 11 a.m.
"Troy is always one of the most fun matches we play each year," head coach Mike Mucci said. "It's a historic rivalry and our guys get up for it just like theirs do. It'll be a fun environment and even though we are a bit banged up, we will be ready to play and go after a big result on the road."
Jax State (5-4) split this week's home matches. They dropped a competitive match against UAB on Tuesday, suffering a pair of late three-set heartbreakers in a 5-2 setback. Fortunately, the Gamecocks rebounded on Thursday and ended a three-match losing streak with a 7-0 shutout of Wallace State Community College.
Troy's men have raced out to an 8-1 start to the new year. After a season-opening loss at Miami, the Trojans have rattled off eight straight wins against the likes of Binghamton, Nicholls, Tennessee State, and Division II programs in Auburn-Montgomery and West Alabama. The historical powers are coming off a 16-win 2022 season in which they defeated Jax State, 4-3, in Jacksonville on March 1 and made a run to the Sun Belt Conference Semifinals.
Jacksonville State's test in Pike County will be their final match of February. The men return to play on Wed., March 1, at home against Mercer.
Saturday's men's match will start at 11 a.m. and the women's will follow, which is slated for a 2 p.m. first-serve. Links to follow along with live stats will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
