JACKSONVILLE – Following Saturday's monumental victory at Troy, Jacksonville State women's tennis returns to play Tuesday in a non-conference road match against Georgia Southern. That tilt will begin at noon CST in Statesboro, Ga.
"Georgia Southern is always a very tough team and very well coached," head coach Mike Mucci said. "They won the Sun Belt in 2021 and always have great depth. We will look to carry the momentum of our win at Troy into this match. The team is ready to go and excited about the challenge."
The Gamecocks (6-1) earned their fifth straight win with a 4-3 triumph at the Lunsford Tennis Complex over the weekend. After the Trojans narrowly claimed the doubles point, Jax State ripped off four consecutive wins in singles play- including a three-set clincher on court five by Dariana Prato- to earn the program's first ever win over Troy. Now, they will head to the Wallis Tennis Center for the second time this academic year for a test against a strong Eagles (3-1) squad.
Georgia Southern, who hosted the GS Shootout that Jacksonville State shined in during the fall, enters Tuesday's match winners of three in a row. GSU fell at Clemson in their season-opener on Feb. 3 but have since scored three impressive triumphs. They swept Wofford on Feb. 5, cruised by South Carolina State, 6-1, on Feb. 13, and earned a slim 4-3 victory at Charleston Southern on Saturday.
As Mucci alluded to, the Eagles claimed the 2021 Sun Belt Championship after upsetting one-seeds UT Arlington and South Alabama in the SBC Tournament. GSU went 12-11 a season ago but have won 20 of their last 23 home matches. Saturday's affair will be their home opener for the Spring 2023 campaign.
Tuesday's match is the second of three straight on the road for the Gamecocks. After playing at Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State will travel south to Tallahassee, Fla., for a non-conference pairing at Florida A&M on Friday morning.
That contest in the Peach State will start at 12 p.m. CST. Links to follow along with live stats will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
