JACKSONVILLE – Gamecock men's tennis will play their final non-conference tune-up of the Spring on Monday against Southern Miss. That match early next week at the JSU Tennis Courts will begin at 1 p.m.
"We're feeling good about Southern Miss," associate head coach Trey Morris said. "Their teams are always talented. We saw them in the Fall at ITA Regionals, and they consistently have a tough group to compete against. USM is typically battle-tested, especially when you play them this time of year. We're of course excited to get another crack at a tough team before we get going with the ASUN.
"Overall, we've had a great week of training, including that tight match versus Radford," Morris said. "We felt that there were plenty of positive things we could take off that result even though we fell short. We believe that if we can make some adjustments and continue to do what we're doing well, we should have a great opportunity to get some results against Southern Miss."
The Gamecocks (7-6) are looking to respond after dropping a spirited showdown with Radford on Wednesday. Jax State had opportunities to take control in singles play, but three consecutive three-set heartbreakers sealed their fate in a 5-1 setback. Now, they will face a healthy Southern Miss (6-6) program in their last non-ASUN test of the 2023 campaign.
USM has alternated wins and losses throughout the start of the season. They have suffered some decisive setbacks to foes like FGCU (7-0), LSU (7-0), and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (5-2) but have also tallied impressive wins over Bucknell (5-2), Nicholls (6-1), and UTRGV (4-3). After falling at New Orleans, 5-2, last Saturday, March 4, the Golden Eagles will have had just over a week off before their outing in Calhoun County.
The two southeastern programs have battled nine times in the last 12 seasons. After a 6-1 triumph for Jacksonville State in Jan. 2011, the Eagles rattled off five wins in a row in Hattiesburg, Miss. From 2012-2016. The Gamecocks won on the road, 6-1, on March 6, 2020, but have lost the last two pairings. The only previous meeting in Jacksonville saw USM take a 4-3 win in 2021, and the Golden Eagles reigned victorious with a 4-1 decision last February.
Admission to attend Monday's match in Jacksonville is free of charge and action will begin at 1 p.m. Links to follow along with live stats will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
