JACKSONVILLE – After recording a thrilling win against Southern Miss in Monday's non-conference finale, Jacksonville State men's tennis will hit the road this weekend to open ASUN Conference play. The Gamecocks take on Eastern Kentucky at 10 a.m. Friday morning in that match in Richmond, Ky.
"We're excited to open up conference play with our first matchup in Richmond," associate head coach Trey Morris said. "It's an exciting time in EKU tennis history as they have restarted their program and are competing in the ASUN for the first time, so I know they're going to be up for the match. Our guys are ready for that, though. We're ready to start ASUN play and get things underway.
"We feel that we can bring our quality and hopefully start 1-0 in the conference, but we know that when you get to this time of year, every match is going to be a battle," Morris said. "We're going to embrace that battle and be ready to compete."
Jax State (8-6) ensured a winning record in non-league action with Monday's win at the JSU Tennis Courts. Following a tight doubles point that went against visiting USM, the Red-and-White got just enough separation in singles flights to tally a 5-2 triumph. While that victory was huge, Friday's test in the Bluegrass State is even bigger.
Eastern Kentucky (3-10, 0-1) resumed their tennis programs this Spring after a five-year hiatus. A young Colonels squad has dropped some disappointing matches, including sweep setbacks versus Louisville and South Carolina State, but have also had big wins over the likes of Campbellsville, NC Central, and Southern Indiana. EKU dropped their ASUN opener at home on Friday, losing control of the match in singles action in a 4-3 heartbreaker versus Lipscomb.
The Gamecocks have beaten their longtime Ohio Valley Conference foes just three times since the turn of the century. After back-to-back results in 2004 and 2005, EKU won nine in a row over Jax State before a 6-1 victory for the home team in a late-March 2018 showdown in Calhoun County.

Jacksonville State tennis will return home on Sunday to play host to North Alabama. Sunday's women's match will start around 10 a.m. and the men's contest will follow.
