JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State will wrap up a five-game road trip on Tuesday with a visit to Birmingham for an afternoon contest with UAB at Young Memorial Field.
First pitch between the Gamecocks and Blazers is set for 4 p.m. The game will be carried on the Gamecock Sports Network and streamed online with a subscription to C-USA.tv.
The Gamecocks and Blazers will be meeting for the 48th time on Tuesday with Jax State holing a 30-17 lead in the series that dates back to 1987. Jax State enters Tuesday's contest in Birmingham with eight wins over the last nine meetings between the two on-state programs. UAB claimed the only contest played between the two teams last season, 7-1, in Jacksonville. The two clubs played three innings at Young Memorial Field before weather made it a no contest. JSU and UAB will wrap up the two-game season series when the Blazers visit Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium on April 25.
Entering the final week of the month of March, Jax State picked up steam by winning nine-of-its-last-10 games, including a 6-0 start through the first two weekends of ASUN action. The Gamecocks have put together a 10-6 mark during the month. Entering Tuesday's contest, the JSU offense ranks 22nd in NCAA Division I Baseball in total hits with 261 total hits and in the top-50 in batting average with a .305 clip.
A pair of Birmingham area natives are leading the way for the Gamecocks offensively. Senior T.J. Reeves, who played at Hueytown High School, leads the club in RBI with 29 and sports a .391 average at the plate. Reeves has multiple hits in half of JSU's 24 games this season and has collected seven multiple RBI games. Junior Mason Maners has joined Reeves as a mainstay in the lineup with a .341 batting average. The Vestavia Hills product enters Tuesday's outing riding a 36-game on-base streak, which dates back to the last 12 games of the 2022 campaign. The streak ranks third in NCAA Division I Baseball behind Illinois' Brandon Comia's 58-game on-base streak that spans two seasons. Maners has seven games with multiple hits and a game back of Reeves in multiple RBI games.
Over the last 10 games, the top-two in Jax State's lineup has set the table for Reeves and Maners. Junior Javon Hernandez is hitting .600 over the last 10 games and has posted 11 RBI. Freshman Bear Madliak, who has moved to the leadoff spot, has the best average on the squad at .408 entering the midweek action.
Senior Trey Fortner will be making his second start of the season on Tuesday. The Jax State pitching staff has an earned run average of 3.08 over the last 10 games with 88 strikeouts and just 28 walks over the last 85.0 innings. In the last 10 games, the opposition is hitting .227 against the Gamecock arms.
Following the trip to UAB, the Gamecocks return home to host ASUN rival Kennesaw State in a key conference weekend series. The series will begin on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. Saturday contest and the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com.
