JACKSONVILLE – After dominating Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader at the JSU Tennis Courts, Gamecock women's tennis returns to play with a pair of tough tests this weekend. Jacksonville State will host Chattanooga at 11 a.m. Saturday and travel to Alabama A&M the following day for an intrastate showdown at 10 a.m.
"Chattanooga is a very solid and well-coached program that's having a great season," head coach Mike Mucci said. "We will try to carry our momentum from back-to-back wins into this match and try to get another good result.
"Against A&M, we need to get ready for a quick turnaround on the road," Mucci said. "We know there will be challenges with that, but I'm excited to see what happens this weekend with our group."
Jax State (9-2) cruised by their competition earlier this week in Jacksonville. They dismantled a proud Mercer program in the morning match, handing them a 7-0 setback. That served as the Gamecocks' first win over the Bears in ten seasons. Then, in their afternoon showdown with Wallace State Community College, Mucci's team won each singles and doubles flight en route to another sweep.
The Red-and-White will be challenged two more times this weekend with their home matchup versus the Mocs (9-1) and road game at the home of the Bulldogs (4-6).
Chattanooga has had an impressive start to their 2023 campaign. The historical power Mocs have come back with a vengeance after falling in the SoCon Semifinals last Spring and have recorded victories over talented opponents in Murray State, UNC Asheville, and Western Kentucky. Their only loss came on Feb. 3 at Middle Tennessee State in a 4-3 heartbreaker.
Alabama A&M, on the other hand, have suffered some decisive losses in non-conference play thus far. The Bulldogs were swept by Chattanooga, Lipscomb, Mississippi State, Troy, and UAB, and lost 6-1 at Mercer in late January. However, they have started conference play 3-0 after tallying SWAC victories over Bethune-Cookman, Grambling State, and Southern.
The Gamecocks are 4-23 all-time versus Chattanooga, with their last win in the series coming on March 3, 2010. The Mocs have won the last seven meetings. Jax State defeated Alabama A&M, 6-1, last Feb. in Calhoun County, and have not lost to the Bulldogs in recent memory.
Admission to attend Saturday's match in Jacksonville or Sunday's pairing in Huntsville will be free of charge. Action will begin at 11 a.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts. The men will also be playing AAMU on Sunday and their match will start at 1 p.m. Links to follow along with live stats for each of those contests will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
