JACKSONVILLE – Gamecock women's tennis will come back to the friendly confines this weekend for a pair of league tests in Calhoun County. Jacksonville State will take on North Florida at 10 a.m. Friday and meet Kennesaw State at 10 a.m. Sunday.
"UNF has been one of the premier programs in the ASUN for a long time," head coach Mike Mucci said. "It's an exciting time. We are learning more and more about ourselves every match and we're pumped to be back at home for such a big matchup."
Jax State (14-4, 4-1) had mixed results in last weekend's road-trip north. They rolled to another dominant ASUN Conference win at Queens (N.C.) on Friday, claiming the doubles point and notching five singles triumphs in a 6-1 victory in Charlotte. Sunday's humongous pairing at Liberty saw Mucci's women drop their first conference match of 2023, however, as the Flames overcame a 3-0 deficit to shock the Gamecocks will a pair of late three-set decisions.
This weekend, though, Jacksonville State will look to get back in the win column as they head down the stretch of ASUN action.
North Florida (11-6, 3-1) has maintained their reputation as one of the best programs in the southeast early into conference play. The Ospreys downed non-conference foes Charleston Southern (5-2), Georgia Southern (4-3), and Kansas State (4-0) and nearly posted upsets against the likes of Auburn and Florida State. After a disappointing 5-2 loss at Stetson to open the league slate, UNF has rattled off three consecutive wins over Austin Peay, Kennesaw State, and no. 70 Florida Gulf Coast to catapult towards the top of the ASUN standings.
Last season's showdown at the JSU Tennis Courts was the first ever meeting between the Gamecocks and Ospreys. North Florida flexed their muscles, earning a 7-0 win on the road in a year that saw them advance to the conference semifinals and send a singles competitor and a doubles tandem to the NCAA Championships.
