Jansson Leads Gamecocks In Remarkable Opening Day at ASUN

MOBILE – Erik Jansson and the Jacksonville State men's golf team had one of the best days in the school's golf history at the ASUN Conference Championship on Tuesday, putting them in contention headed into the final round.

Jansson holds a one-shot lead after the best day of his Jax State career, while his team sits in a tie with North Florida for second just eight shots behind Liberty with one round to play.

A bad forecast for Thursday forced the ASUN to change the originally scheduled three-day event to a two-day tournament that featured 36 holes on Tuesday and the final 18 on Wednesday. The Gamecocks weren't phased by the impromptu long day.

They carded a 269 to start the day on the par-72, 7,212-yard Crossings Course at Magnolia Grove on the Robert Tret Jones Golf Trail, the best round in a conference tournament in school history and tied for the second-best round in school history. Holding a two-shot lead over No. 42 North Florida after the first round, Jax State answered with an afternoon 275 to post the third-lowest 36-hole score in program history with a 544. They trail No. 39 Liberty by eight shots with the final round set for Wednesday.

Jansson's day was a record-breaking one, as well. The Vasteras, Sweden, native started the day by tying his career low with a 66 before breaking that mark with a second-round 64 that tied for the fourth-lowest round in Gamecock history. Those two rounds ended his day with a 14-under 130, two shots better than the school's 36-hole record set by Jansson earlier this season.

He holds a one-shot lead over Liberty's Jonathan Yaun and Isaac Simmons, while UNF's Nick Gabrelcik and Robbie Higgins are tied for fourth at 11-under.

Jansson wasn't the only Gamecock posting low numbers. He was just leading his team on a day that all five players contributed in big ways. While he was making 14 birdies and an eagle over his 36-hole day, sophomore Ryley Heath was working his way to a collegiate-best 136 that put the Decatur, Ala., native with an 8-under 136 and in a tie for 10th.

Heath fired a bogey-free 67 in Tuesday's morning round before capping his day with an afternoon 69. He played 30 holes before making his first bogey and finished the day with just two in 36 holes.

Jax State's lone senior Ross Napier is tied for 23rd after posting a pair of rounds under par, as well. The Hartselle, Ala., native opened his day with a 3-under 69 and then closed with a 1-under 71 to put him in the clubhouse with a 140.

Sophomore Santiago Bailleres and redshirt freshman Richardo Matho enter the final round in a tie for 42ndafter 36-hole scores of 143. Bailleres fired a 5-under 67 in the opening round before an afternoon 76. Matho shot an even-par 72 in round one before a second-round 71 gave the native of Argentina his first collegiate round under par.

Jansson's second round was the most impressive one he's shot in a season full of impressive moments. He made the turn at just 1-under but posted a 7-under 29 on the back nine. He made five birdies in an eight-hole stretch that also saw him eagle the par-5 13th hole by holing out from a greenside bunker.

Jansson will be playing for his second career win on Wednesday while leading the Gamecocks in contention for the conference title and the ASUN's automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals.

The Gamecocks, Flames and Ospreys will be paired together on Wednesday and will begin play at 9:40 a.m. CT on the par-4 first hole. Live scoring is available online at www.golfstat.com.
