JSU Drop Final Home Non-Conference Outing to Samford

JACKSONVILLE – It was a game of rallies between Jacksonville State and Samford with the Bulldogs erasing a one-run deficit to score five runs over the final three innings to claim a 10-6 win over the Gamecocks on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

After a pair of non-conference setbacks, Jax State turns its attention to the first-ever weekend trip to Lynchburg, Virginia and a series of against ASUN foe and future Conference USA mate Liberty. The series begins on Friday with a 5 p.m. CST start time. The series with the Flames continues on Saturday at 3 p.m. CST and will conclude on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. All three games will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network.

Following three quick innings for both clubs, the Bulldogs took advantage of three defensive miscues in the fourth that led to a four-run fourth inning. JSU answered with a pair of runs after back-to-back triples from junior Mason Maners and senior T.J. Reeves. The combo of Maners and Reeves combined for four hits and four RBI. Reeves, a Birmingham, Alabama native, gave the Gamecocks a one-run lead in the fifth with a three-run home run. His big hit capped off the two-out rally as JSU took a 6-5 after five innings.

Samford matched Jax State with a solo home run to start the seventh inning and took the lead with two more runs in the inning. Samford's Trey Sanders limited the Gamecocks offensively after being handed a two-run lead. Sanders picked up his second win after three innings of work out of the bullpen. The Bulldogs added a pair of insurance runs on a two-run home run in the ninth. Similar to Tuesday night in Troy, the Gamecocks had an opportunity for another rally in the ninth, but Samford's Ben Petschke closed the door to earn his eighth save of the season.
Junior Derrick Jackson, Jr. added two more doubles on the season, giving him a team-high 14 doubles. Freshman Bear Madliak and senior Brooks Bryan had hits in the setback.

The Flames of LU will enter the weekend at 10-11 in the ASUN, while Jax State will start the weekend at 14-7 in the league.
