ASUN seeding on the line as JSU closes season at Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE – Jacksonville State prepares for its final ASUN Conference series visiting a familiar foe in Austin Peay this weekend to wrap up the 2023 regular season.

The Gamecocks (28-19) enter one of the most impact series across the league for determining postseason seeding for next week's ASUN tournament. The Govs (25-20) currently hold the fifth spot in the league standings at 11-10, while JSU sits third with its 13-8 mark. The top four teams in the eight-team field will instantly earn byes into the double-elimination portion of the championship bracket, while seeds 5-8 will play win-or-go-home contests to begin the week on Tuesday.

Jax State owns a much simpler path to securing its position after a strong early part of the season. Simply winning the series over the Govs will ensure JSU the No. 3 seed, while APSU will need a couple of wins and some additional help to move into the top four. Florida Gulf Coast, currently fourth in the standings, could shake up JSU or APSU's seeding based on their weekend series with Kennesaw State who's currently fighting to make the eight-team tournament in ninth.

With 11 teams still alive for postseason spots, JSU could land anywhere between No. 3 and No. 6 depending on the weekend's outcome.

Moved up to allow travel time to DeLand, Fla., early next week, the final weekend series is scheduled to start Friday evening at 5 p.m. if weather permits. The final two matchups of the series will take place Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. All games will stream on ESPN+ with live stats available at JSUGamecockSports.com.

JSU and Austin Peay played regularly since the Gamecocks entered the Ohio Valley Conference in 2003-04. The two teams did not meet last season with JSU's move to the ASUN, but rekindle the series one more time with APSU now a part of the league just before Jax State transitions again to Conference USA next season.
