Gamecocks 17-Under At Golfweek Fall Challenge To Open Season

PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – The Jacksonville State men's golf team had four players finish the Golfweek Fall Challenge under par and in the top 30 to open the season this week.

The Gamecocks tied for eighth in the event with a 17-under par 847 on the par-72, 6,988-yard True Blue Golf Course and had most of their lineup right there together during the three-day, 54-hole event.

Redshirt Junior Gabriel Restrepo led the Jax State effort with a 5-under 211 that tied him for 25th in the 80-player field. He was just one shot ahead of three of his teammates, with senior Erik Jansson, junior Santiago Bailleres and senior Isaac MacNaughton tying for 30th with 54-hole scores of 212 (-4). Junior Ryley Heath finished 72nd with a 6-over 222.

There were plenty of birdies to be made at True Blue over the three days, and the Gamecocks signed for 53 of them. Their 179 pars were second among all teams in the field.

Restrepo tied for 25th in the Golfweek Fall Challenge for the second-straight season, and used rounds of 71-71-69 to account for his 211 this week. The Caracas, Venezuela, native made 42 pars over his 54 holes in the tournament, tied for the most in the field. He only had three holes above par during the week, limiting those to just one per day.

Restrepo made nine birdies over his three days, four of those coming on Tuesday and three over his final nine holes to shoot his 3-under 69 in the final round and move himself 14 spots up the leaderboard over the last 18 holes.

Jansson carded a final-round 71 on Tuesday, rallying from a few bogeys to get there. After bogeying two of his first three holes on Tuesday, the Vasteras, Sweden, native made four birdies over the next five holes to make the turn at 2-under. He played the final seven holes at 1-under after back-to-back bogeys started the back nine and signed for his 71. Like Restrepo, It was his third round under par in the event after a Sunday 70 and a Monday 71.

Bailleres turned in an even-par 72 on Tuesday, following back-to-back rounds of 70 that started his tournament. The Chascomus, Argentina, native got to his 54-hole score of 212 by making 12 total birdies and just seven holes over par over the three-day event.

MacNaughton had an impressive start to his Jax State career after transferring in from Shorter in the offseason. The native of Truro, Nova Scotia, finished with a 4-under score of 212 in his first event as a Gamecock, using an opening round of 71 on Sunday and a 4-under, bogey-free 68 on Monday.

Heath played well through two rounds and entered the final round at even par before his final round 78. The Decatur, Ala., native started the tournament with a 1-over 73 and carded a 1-under 71 in Monday's second round.

The Gamecocks will return to action in a little less than two weeks in an event close to home. They will play in UAB's G-Mac Invitational at Limestone Springs in Oneonta, Ala., from Sept. 24-26.
