Men’s Basketball Tips Off Boardwalk Battle Against East Carolina

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jax State rides a pair of back-to-back wins into the three-day Boardwalk Battle event. The Gamecocks open up the tournament on Thursday against East Carolina before playing again on Friday and Saturday against opponents yet to be determined.

Pierre Tabbed CUSA Player of the Week
Averaging 29 points against a pair of Sun Belt foes, Jaron Pierre Jr. was tabbed the Conference USA Player of the Week on Nov. 18 by the league office. Pierre powered Jax State to wins over Georgia State and Coastal Carolina, scoring 58 points with eight assists in the two games. The redshirt senior also earned national honors, being named the Lou Henson Player of the Week and one of the Oscar Robertson Players of the Week.
Boardwalk Battle Field
Jax State and ECU are just two of eight teams participating at the Ocean Center for the Boardwalk Battle. The Gamecocks and Pirates will each face one of Stetson or Toledo on Nov. 22 pending results from the first day of games. Jax State will match up with one of La Salle, James Madison, UIC or UC San Diego in the third game.

Redshirt-senior Jaron Pierre Jr. has had no trouble finding his way on the scoresheet this season, averaging 25.8 points through four games. Pierre ranks third in the NCAA in points per game, tallying 103 total points. Pierre trails just UC Davis's Ty Johnson (28.2) and Charleston's Ante Brzovic (27.5).
Protecting the Ball
Jax State finished out the 71-53 win over Coastal Carolina with a season-low three turnovers. Jax State finished the game with nine assists for a 3:1 A/TO ratio. Just three turnovers is the fewest by a Jax State team under Ray Harper.
Like Mike
Forward Michael Houge has surpassed the double-digit mark for rebounds in three of four so far this season. After pulling down 12 rebounds in the season opener and 11 at Air Force, Houge grabbed 12 rebounds at home against Georgia State. The Saint Peter's transfer ranks 21st in the NCAA in total rebounds (43) and 11th in rebounds per game (10.6).
Charity Shots
Through three games, Jax State is 54-of-66 from the charity stripe, good for a team free throw percentage of .818. The mark of 81.8 percent ranks Jax State eighth out of 364 NCAA teams in free throw percentage. Jaron Pierre Jr. leads the team with 19 made free throws, or 4.8 made free throws per game.
Carrying the Momentum
After a stellar finish to last season, Jax State center Mason Nicholson has continued to shine for the Gamecocks, stringing together a pair of double-doubles in his first four games of the 2024-25 season. Nicholson set a new career high in both points and rebounds in the season finale last year and has already set a new career high in rebounds this year with 14.
A Common Foe
Despite the young season, Jax State and East Carolina have both already played a common opponent in 2024-25. Jax State traveled to Conway, S.C. on Sunday, defeating Coastal Carolina 71-53 in the HTC Center. East Carolina battled with the Chanticleers on Nov. 9 in Greenville, N.C., with the Pirates coming out on top 63-59.
