ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – After one of the best fall seasons in Jax State golf history by
Erik Jansson, the senior picked up where he left off to start the spring season.
Jansson fired three rounds under par and shot 200, tying the third-lowest 54-hole score in school history to win the World Golf Village Collegiate and lead the Gamecocks to a second-place finish on Tuesday.
"It was a good to start to our season and the win was well in reach," head coach
Michael Brice Said. "I can't say enough about Erik. He is the foundation of this program. These guys are hungry and I Know they have something to prove to themselves. We can't wait to get back to Stetson March 4."
The senior from Vasteras, Sweden, carded rounds of 68-62-70 to post the 16-under score and win the 108-player field by three shots over Kasey Lilly of Purdue Fort Wayne. His 62 in the second-round tied the second-lowest score in program history and was one shot off of the course record on the par-72, 7,068-yard King & Bear Golf Course.
The win was the third of Jansson's career and his second of the season after he won Arkansas State's Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate in the fall. He extended his streak of consecutive rounds of par or better to 18, 17 of which have been below par.
Jansson opened the tournament with a double and two bogeys in his first six holes and then turned it on. He played the final 12 holes of his first round at 7-under to post a 68 and then carried that play into his second round.
The bogey-free, 10-under 62 was two shots better than his career low and made him 14-under with the lead after 36 holes of the 54-hole event. His 130 through two rounds tied his own record for lowest 36 holes in school history and gives him the top-three 36-hole scores ever by a Gamecock.
Jansson started his final round on a tear, as well. He played the first 11 holes of Tuesday's round at 5-under and held off the field to earn medalist honors. He led the field in par-3 and par-4 scoring and was fourth in the field in par-5 scoring, while his 21 birdies were four more than any other player in the event.
Jax State finished three shots behind first-place Stetson and 11 ahead of third-place Belmont.
