KENNESAW, Ga. – Following a pair of dominant wins over SoCon powers Furman and Chattanooga last weekend, Jacksonville State men's tennis heads back to the courts for some midweek action. Thursday's road showdown pits the Gamecocks against future Conference USA foe Kennesaw State, and first serve at the Betty Siegel Courts in Kennesaw, Ga., is set for 12 p.m. CT.
Jax State (7-4) comes into this week's match riding the high of a four-game winning streak. After a home-opening loss to now-ranked Troy on Feb. 17, they drubbed Lipscomb and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in a Sunday doubleheader the next day. Add last weekend's victories over the Paladins and Mocs, and the Red-and-White are currently in the midst of their longest win streak in over a year (Jan. 25-Feb. 4, 2023, won four in a row).
Several Gamecocks have gotten off to a hot start in their Spring 2024 campaign. Senior Vanja Dorbnjac and sophomore Matei Palcau have six singles win each, just ahead of Marko Milosavljevic and Xavier Sarda Marti who have won five. Dobrnjac also leads the team in doubles wins (six), but Milosavljevic and fellow freshman Zach Murphy narrowly trial him with five each.
For Jacksonville State's men to keep up their winning streak, though, they will need more big outings on Thursday in Cobb County, Ga.
Kennesaw State (4-2) has looked solid in limited action this Spring. They opened the year sweeping a home doubleheader with West Alabama, then were swept at Alabama on Feb. 3. KSU dropped their second straight road match at Georgia Southern, 4-3, on Feb. 7, but have since won their last two. The Owls topped Samford at home, 4-3, on Feb. 14, and defeated UNC Asheville, 4-2, last Saturday.
KSU, who is in their last season as a member of the ASUN Conference, is coming off a 14-8 season last year in which they went 5-3 in league action and tallied two ASUN Tournament wins before bowing out against FGCU in the semifinals. The Owls were shocked by Jax State last year in Jacksonville, 5-2. That marked the program's first win in the rivalry series since 2014.
