Jax State and KSU met every single season from 2006 to 2016. After not playing each other in 2017 and 2019, the two clubs have faced off against each other in a home-and-home set in 2020 and 2021. Jax State will be looking to get back on track after dropping a weekend series to in-state foe South Alabama last weekend. The Gamecocks bounced-back from a Friday setback to even the series on Saturday with a 9-3 win over the Jaguars. The Owls enter the weekend 3-5 on the season with one of those wins being an 18-1 decision over No. 11 Clemson to open the series last weekend.
Through the first seven games of the season, the two mainstays in the Jax State lineup have been freshman outfielder Gabe Young and sophomore shortstop Caleb Johnson. Young, who had an RBI on Sunday begins the week hitting .400 as he shares the team lead for total hits with Johnson. The duo has combined for 20 of the 60 hits on the season so far. Johnson is coming off a solid weekend in Mobile with a pair of home runs on the weekend and pushing his RBI mark to nine on the season. He and junior Brennen Norton have three home runs each on the season to pace the Gamecocks in that category.
The Gamecocks will send junior Austin Cornelius to the mound for his third start of the season. The Hoover, Alabama righty was the opening day starter against Memphis on Feb. 16 and tossed the first 2.2 innings last Tuesday at Samford.
