Ramenskaja Named CUSA Athlete of the Week

JACKSONVILLE – Sophomore Gamecock Polina Ramenskaja was honored for a strong week on the courts on Wednesday afternoon as she was named Conference USA's Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week. The Narva, Estonia, native turned in three solid performances for Jacksonville State in last week's three non-conference matches.

"Polina had a good week," head coach Michael Helms said. "She has worked hard on both the physical and mental side of her game the last month. She's also played through some bumps and bruises, and I love that above everything else. She is a tough kid willing to sacrifice for her team, so this is an award that's well-deserved."

The second-year Gamecock went a perfect 2-0 in singles play last week. Ramenskaja tallied a comeback win in singles on Tuesday at UAB, downing Klara Kajabova 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, in a 4-1 win for Jax State (3-3). In Friday's home opener against Alabama A&M, she posted a 6-3, 6-2, result at No. 1 singles as part of a 7-0 triumph. In addition, she was battling in court two in singles during Sunday's 4-0 loss against Texas Tech when the contest was clinched by the Red Raiders.

Ramenskaja paired with Serafima Shastova in doubles action for all three of those matches. The sophomore tandem battled in No. 1 doubles at UAB and were up 5-4 when the opening point was clinched by the Blazers. They rebounded with a 6-2 drubbing of the Bulldogs on Friday, then lost 6-2 versus TTU in Auburn on Sunday.

The standout Gamecock is no stranger to league accolades. She was deemed the ASUN Conference Player of the Week last year as a freshman, winning the award for the week of Jan. 26, 2023, after upsetting Mississippi State's Maria Rizzolo in three sets in Starkville, Miss. Thus far this season, Ramenskaja is tied for the team's lead in singles victories (three) and second in doubles wins (three).

Ramenskaja and the Gamecocks return to play on Sunday as they make the trip to North Alabama for a matchup with the Lions. That showdown in Florence will begin at 1 p.m. Links to follow along with live stats will be provided at JaxStateSports.com.
