KENNESAW, Ga. – Jacksonville State women's tennis hits the road again this weekend in search of their third consecutive triumph. The Gamecocks will carry their two-match winning streak to Kennesaw, Ga., on Saturday afternoon to take on the Kennesaw State Owls at 12 p.m. CT.
Jax State (5-4) got back above .500 with a pair of triumphs away from home last week. They crushed Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark., on Saturday, winning 6-1 in the Natural State. Then, on Sunday, Michael Helms' team picked up five straight singles wins to close out a 5-2 triumph over Central Arkansas in Memphis, Tenn.
Senior Dariana Prato is a team-best 6-3 in singles action thus far, but junior Zuzana Pavelekova and sophomore Polina Ramenskaja are at her heels with five individual wins each. Sophomore Spaniard Irene Artigas leads the team in doubles victories with six. Prato and sophomore Serafima Shastova have tallied five doubles triumphs.
For the Red-and-White to win their third straight they will have to come out on top against a bitter rival in a hostile environment.
Kennesaw State (3-4) has faced a tough non-conference schedule to this point. The Owls are coming off an 11-win year last time out. They won a match in the ASUN Tournament at season's end before falling to FGCU in the quarterfinals. A good portion of their production returns this Spring, but a stout slate has resulted in just three wins so far.
They dropped their first two matches at Louisville, 6-1, and Georgia Southern, 5-2, four weeks ago, then scored a 4-3 victory at Alabama State on Feb. 9. UAB topped KSU, 5-2, on Feb. 16. Kennesaw State went 2-1 over the weekend, defeating Western Carolina 6-1 on Friday, losing at UNC Asheville 4-3 on Saturday, and downing Presbyterian at home, 5-2, on Sunday to close out a busy weekend.
The two longtime rivals have met 13 times in the last decade-and-a-half. Jacksonville State is just 4-9 in the series, recording their last win in a 5-2 victory in Kennesaw on March 19, 2019. The Owls have won the last four pairings.
Fans unable to make it to Saturday's match can follow along with live stats links provided at JaxStateSports.com. The Gamecocks travel to Florence, Ala., next Friday for an in-state showdown with North Alabama, then head to the Bluegrass State on Sunday to take on Murray State.
