JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State women's tennis will look to end a three-match losing skid as they hit the road for three matches in the Bayou State this weekend. The Gamecocks will take on Louisiana Tech on Saturday, play at UL Monroe on Sunday, and wrap up an extended trip at New Orleans on Tuesday.
Jax State (5-7) had a rough weekend on the road last time out, losing both of their pairings away from home. They were swept at North Alabama, 4-0, last Saturday, then suffered a 4-3 setback at Murray State the following afternoon. Michael Helms' squad will try to put those struggles in the rearview this week, though, as they prepare for a stretch of three matches in four days.
Despite a rough last couple outings, several performers for the Red-and-White are still having a Spring to remember. Senior Dariana Prato leads the team with eight singles wins, but sophomores Irene Artigas and Serafima Shastova are narrowly behind with a 6-3 mark. Doubles is a tight race as well. Artigas has a team-best six results in two-on-two play, but Shastova and Prato are both at five doubles victories at the moment. The program needs big outings from those standouts and others as they look ahead to three big matches this weekend.
Louisiana Tech (10-5) won 20 matches a season ago and has gotten off to a good start this Spring. An experienced group has totaled seven Division I wins, including road triumphs against Conference USA foes New Mexico State and UTEP. They will host Incarnate Word a day before welcoming Jacksonville State to the LA Tech Tennis Complex.
Jax State will make the short drive to Monroe, La., to meet UL Monroe (1-7) at noon Sunday. The Warhawks, who won just three Sun Belt matches last season, picked up a triumph in their season-opening test with LSU Shreveport but have lost seven straight since.
New Orleans (3-4) will host the Gamecocks at 2 p.m. Tuesday in NOLA. The Privateers limped out to a slow start but have quietly won three of their last five matches. UNO has beaten Mississippi Valley State, Lamar, and SIU-Edwardsville this Spring and will face off with Missouri State and Tulane before Tuesday's matchup in the Big Easy.
The Gamecocks continue their Spring Break road trip next weekend with a morning match at Gardner-Webb. That contest in Boiling Springs, N.C., will have a 10 a.m. CT first serve on Sat., March 23.
