JACKSONVILLE – Gamecock men's tennis takes part in a quick Spring Break road trip this week in which they will face off with two solid opponents. Jacksonville State plays at UNC Asheville at 11 a.m. CT Monday morning, then travels to Jacksonville, Fla., for a 1 p.m. CT Wednesday tilt at North Florida.
Jax State (10-6) has won three of its last four matches after scoring a ranked win on Saturday. The Red-and-White thumped in-state rival North Alabama at home on March 2, then suffered a 4-3 setback at the hands of Georgia Southern two days later. Fortunately, Trey Morris' squad has bounced back with two consecutive 4-3 results at Southern Miss on March 9 and versus No. 70 Dartmouth on Saturday.
Following Saturday's victory at the Hoover Met against the Big Green, senior Vanja Dobrnjac continues to lead the team in singles wins with nine. Freshman Marko Milosavljevic, who clinched the match over Dartmouth, has won eight one-on-one showdowns and Liam Day is third with a 7-3 mark. Dobrnjac's 8-5 record in doubles action is tops for Jax State as well, but Milosavljevic, Zach Murphy, Xavier Sarda Marti, and Lucius Soller each have six doubles decisions. Those standouts will need to produce again as the group looks for a couple more triumphs on the road this week.
UNC Asheville (9-4) is a typical Big South power and has opened its 2024 slate with a strong start. The Bulldogs have tallied four wins against Division I foes, including a 4-3 victory over UAB last Sunday in Fort Myers, Fla. Only Charlotte, Elon, FGCU, and Kennesaw State have defeated UNCA this Spring.
North Florida (3-8) won 16 matches, qualified for the ASUN Semifinals, and downed Jacksonville State 6-1 at the Jax State Tennis Courts a season ago. A lot of production left the team, though, and the new-look group has faced a tough non-conference schedule. To this point their only wins are over Chattanooga, Radford, and South Carolina State, but UNF is 3-2 this season at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Gamecocks and Bulldogs have not played before, so Monday's match at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown will be the first in series history. Jacksonville State is still looking for its first win over the Ospreys after losing to them in 1994, 1995, 2022, and 2023.
