MONTGOMERY – Jax State dropped the final game of the Black and Gold Tournament Sunday afternoon to tournament host Alabama State.
The Gamecocks (7-12) fell behind early and eventually ran out of innings in their comeback efforts. Allowing three walks, two hits and an error in the home half of the first, Jax State opened the door for ASU to score four runs and take an early commanding lead.
After a rocky start for freshman MacKinley Portillo, sophomore Jordan Eslinger finished the opening frame for Jax State. Eslinger remained in the circle the rest of the way as she settled the Hornets down to just two hits and struck out eight over 5.2 innings.
With Eslinger holding ASUN scoreless after the first, Jax State made its first dent in the deficit in the third inning when Emma Jones scored on Emma Elrod's single that came after Jones stole her seventh base of the season to move into scoring position. Jax State continued to chip away at the hole with a run in the fifth and again in the sixth to cut it to a one, but the big hits never came on time as the Gamecocks left sox baserunners stranded.
The Hornets turned away Jax State's final attempts in the seventh as Jones, Elrod and Lindsey Richardson were sat down in order.
Jax State heads to Atlanta Tuesday afternoon to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
