JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –Two Gamecocks placed in the Top 10 and led the Jacksonville State men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
Senior
Erik Jansson finished second and just one shot off the lead, while fellow senior
Isaac MacNaughton tied for ninth to pace Jax State, who continued its impressive start to the spring season.
Jansson, the Gamecocks' senior leader from Vasteras, Sweden, finished the 54-hole tournament with a 3-under 214, one shot behind medalist Dominic Clemons of Stetson, while his team's total score of 892 was just behind a second-place tie between Troy and Longwood. Host Stetson won the 14-team event.
Jansson carded rounds of 73-65-76 on the par-72, 7,015-yard Hills Course at LPGA International, with his second-round 65 the lowest round of the tournament by any player in the 88-player field. He led the field in par-3 scoring at minus-1 and was third in the field with 10 birdies.
MacNaughton made the most of his first appearance of the spring, carding a 54-hole score of 222 (+6) to finish in the Top 10. The Truro, Nova Scotia, native sandwiched a second-round 69 between rounds of 75 and 78. He finished in a five-way tie for ninth. His second-round score was one of just four rounds below 70 in the tournament, two of which came from Gamecocks.
Redshirt junior
Gabriel Restrepo tied for 25
th in the tournament, carding a 54-hole score of 227 (+11). The native of Caracas, Venezuela, had a consistent tournament for the Gamecocks. He opened the tournament with a 76 on Monday morning, flowed with a 75 in the second round and then shot 76 in Tuesday's final round.
Redshirt sophomore
Ricardo Matho played his best round on Tuesday, shooting 73 to answer back-to-back rounds of 78 on Monday. The Argentina native's 54-hole score of 229 tied him for 35
th in the field.
Redshirt sophomore
David Melichar represented Jax State as an individual and tied for 67
th. The Czech Republic native opened with a solid round of 75 before shooting 81 in Monday's afternoon round and 83 on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks will turn around quickly and compete on Monday at Auburn's Tiger Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Auburn University Club, which was an NCAA Regional host last season.
