JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's women's tennis squad will partake in a weekend full of tennis on the road beginning on Saturday. The Gamecocks travel to Florence, Ala., on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. bout at North Alabama, then head to Murray State at 1 p.m. Sunday for an affair in the Bluegrass State.
Jax State (5-5) won their pairings away from home versus Arkansas State and Central Arkansas on Feb. 24 and 25 before losing in their only contest last week. Though they battled hard down the stretch, Michael Helms' team could not overcome a slow start in Saturday's 4-3 loss at rival Kennesaw State. They will look to put that heartbreaker behind them as they prepare for two tough tests this week.
Senior Dariana Prato continues to lead the team in singles action and enters this week with a 7-3 mark in one-on-one play. Irene Artigas, Serafima Shastova, Polina Ramenskaja, and Zuzana Pavelekova have five singles wins each thus far. Artigas' six doubles results are tops on the squad, but Prato and Shastova are just behind her with five.
North Alabama (7-2) has opened the Spring 2024 season on an absolute tear. After winning just seven matches a year ago and getting blanked by Jacksonville State in the ASUN Tournament, the Lions have come back with a vengeance this season and matched last year's win total in just nine showings. Aside from competitive losses to in-state powers Samford and UAB, UNA has run through their non-conference slate with impressive triumphs over Alcorn State, Chattanooga, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, Murray State, Tennessee State, and Troy.
The early goings of the new campaign have gone in favor of Murray State (8-2) as well. The Racers were a .500 team overall and in Missouri Valley Conference play in 2023 but have dominated their 2024 schedule to this point. Only Lipscomb and North Alabama have topped MSU this year, and Jax State's former Ohio Valley Conference foe has already beaten a pair of Conference USA opponents in Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee.
The Gamecocks lead the all-time series with North Alabama 5-2. UNA won matches in Calhoun County in 2019 and 2021, but Jacksonville State has won three consecutive in the series including a 6-1 triumph at home last Spring. Murray State, on the other hand, is 10-5 against Jax State and have lost to them just once in the past decade: 4-3 in Jacksonville on March 30, 2019.
The Gamecocks travel to the Bayou State next weekend for matches against Louisiana Tech, Grambling State, UL Monroe, and New Orleans.
