FLORENCE, Ala. – Jacksonville State's beach volleyball squad opens its 2024 campaign on the road on Friday. The Gamecocks will travel across the state to take on Austin Peay and the host Lions at North Alabama's Shoals Beach Bash.
Jax State is under new leadership this Spring. Derek Schroeder was hired last offseason as the newest indoor and beach volleyball head coach for the Red-and-White and, after their first indoor season in Calhoun County this past Fall, Schroeder and his staff will kick off play in this sand this weekend in Florence.
The Gamecocks are coming off a challenging 2023 season. The team did not win a match but competed well down the stretch with a new-look team and an interim staff. With that season in the rearview, however, Schroeder and assistants Tim Ebbecke and Jenna Sullivan are prepared for a productive Spring to get their program set for an important second Fall in Jacksonville.
Much of the 2023 indoor roster will take part in beach action this year. Beach-only player Kiara Amigon will combine with indoor returners like seniors Carley Lynch and Stavroula Papazoglou, juniors Katelyn Crofts, Ellie Garrett, Kaylee Moseley, and Brooklyn Schiffli, sophomores Morgan McClure, Parker Phenicie, Kathryn Smith, and Luci Wilkinson, and freshmen Hana Aiana and Selin Sakiroglu. Furthermore, incoming transfers Caty Havekost (Northeastern Junior College) and Madison Konopka (Binghamton) will receive playing time this Spring as well.
Jax State meets Austin Peay, a typical beach power, at 11 a.m. Friday at UNA. Then, at 1 p.m., the Gamecocks and North Alabama will duke it out to bring an end to Jacksonville State's participation in the Shoals Beach Bash.
In addition to their beach action, Schroeder's squad will scrimmage the Lions' indoor team on Saturday in Florence.
