JACKSONVILLE – After a weekend off, the Jacksonville State baseball team returns to action on Tuesday with a midweek contest at UAB.
First pitch from UAB's Young Memorial Field is set for 4 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
The Gamecocks hope the rest and momentum from a pair of midweek wins last week will carry over to the stretch run of the season. Jax State (14-23) enters the week riding a two-game winning streak after completing the season sweep of Alabama State last Tuesday on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium and took down Troy last Wednesday on the road. UAB begins the week at 17-21 overall and return home after a weekend in San Antonio, Texas in a series setback to UTSA.
Tuesday's match up is the second of three meetings this season between the Gamecocks and Blazers. The two clubs added a game in Jacksonville on March 13 with Jax State posting a 14-3 win over UAB in seven innings. UAB and Jax State will conclude the season series on May 7 in Jacksonville. Jax State leads the series against the Blazers, 31-19, but have dropped three of the last four games to UAB.
Sophomore Caleb Johnson and sophomore Bear Madliak lead the Gamecocks at the plate coming off the idle weekend. Johnson, who has reached base in 36-of-the-37 games this season, enters the week hitting .311 with a team-best 47 hits, including 24 extra base hits. Madliak, who has been behind the plate for all 37 games this season, has pushed his average over the .300 mark with 44 hits on the season. Like Johnson, Madliak has put together a string of consecutive games reached with 28 straight games having reached base.
The home run ball has keyed the Jax State offense this season with 45 home runs in 37 games this season and ranks fifth in the league heading into the week. Dallas Baptist leads CUSA with 66, while LFIU has tallied 58 home runs on the season. The 45 home runs on the season matches the 2017 club's season mark. The last Gamecock squad to have 50-plus home runs on the season was the 2012 team that finished the season with 51. Junior Brennen Norton is listed second among CUSA hitters in home runs with 11 on the season.
Jax State will send senior Kyle Chastine to the mound for his second start of the season and his 15th of the season. The lefty has been stellar in his last two outings on the mound with 7.2 innings of work with nine strikeouts and three runs. He established a new career high in strikeouts with seven against Georgia State.
After the UAB game, the Gamecocks will begin the second half of the Conference USA slate with New Mexico State making a visit to Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium for a key league series. The series begins on Friday at 6 p.m. The series continues on Saturday with another evening contest at 6 p.m. before the series wraps up on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available at JaxStateSports.com. All Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free.
