Series History
Jacksonville State and Southern Miss meet for just the third time in program history and the first time since 1946. The Golden Eagles won both of the previous meetings, including the first between the schools all the way back in 1937.
Huffing and Puffing
Jax State quarterback
Tyler Huff is averaging 13.4 yards per completion through three games in 2024. Huff has completed 48-of-75 attempts for 644 yards and four touchdowns in his first trio of contests as a Gamecock. The Furman transfer also leads the team in rushing with 192 yards and 5.2 yard per carry.
When it Rains, it Pours
The Jax State defense hunkered down and tallied five sacks against the Eagles. The Gamecocks rattled off their first four sacks of the season on a single third quarter drive in Ypsilanti.
J-Rock Swain leads the team, being responsible for 1.5 sacks.
At the Top of the FBS
Jax State head coach
Rich Rodriguez enters week four in seventh place among active FBS head coaches in career wins. In his 27th season as a head coach, Rodriguez has a 181-128-2 career record. Rodriguez made head coaching stops at Salem, Glenville State, West Virginia, Michigan and Arizona prior to landing at Jax State ahead of the 2022 season.
Experience in the Booth
Jacksonville State radio announcer Mike Parris and Southern Miss play-by-play man John Cox have a combined 89 seasons of radio experience for their respective teams. Parris is in his 42nd season as the voice of the Gamecocks while Cox has served on the Golden Eagles radio broadcast since 1978.
Climbing the Ranks
Jax State senior punter
Jack Dawson continues to move up the Gamecock record book. His 8,885 punting yards and 42.12 career punting average are both the best marks in school history. Dawson is averaging 43.4 yards per punt so far this season, a number that puts him 34th in the FBS.
Birds of a Feather
The first five opponents of the season forJacksonville State all feature mascots of the bird variety. After opening up the season with the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina, Jax State has most recently taken on the Louisville Cardinals and the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The Gamecocks next two games are set to be against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles and the Kennesaw State Owls.
