MACON, Ga. – Jax State's women's tennis program had a good showing at the annual Mercer Gridiron Classic over the weekend.
The Gamecocks went 14-12 in singles, while in doubles the Gamecocks ended the event with a 9-5 weekend, including a 3-0 showing on Sunday.
"Overall, I'm pleased with how we competed this weekend," head coach Michael Helms said. "This tournament is always a grind, and it really reveals who loves the sport and is willing to battle. That said, I'm not fully satisfied with our doubles play. We'll keep adjusting pairings until we find the right combinations that give us the best chance to win matches consistently."
On Friday, Oct. 3, the Gamecocks went 5-4 in singles. Irene Artigas, Polina Ramenskaja, Aneka Patel, Sae Kaneko, and Emma Montagner all got wins. On Saturday, the Gamecocks went 9-8 in a long day of matches.
Saturday was the final day for the Gamecocks to play in singles. Ramenskaja ended the tournament with a 2-1 singles record, Artigas went 2-1, Patel went 2-1, Kaneko went 2-1, and Montagner went 2-1. Also in the tournament, Isabella Sambola went 1-2, Angeles Rodriguez Rizo went 2-1 thanks to a pair of wins on Saturday, Ava Thomason went 0-2, and Alba Roche went 0-3.
The Gamecocks will move on to the ITA Regionals on Oct. 13 – Oct. 17 in Auburn.
