CARROLLTON, Ga. – Jax State used a huge, eight run fourth inning to spoil West Georgia's home opener on Tuesday in a dominant 16-2 win. Jax State scored its most runs since 2020 to pick up its fifth road victory of the season.
The Gamecocks (14-7) led 4-2 entering the fourth frame before an offensive explosion left the Wolves (6-9) with a 10-run deficit.
Kailey Martin set the tone for Jax State, launching a three-run first inning homer for the Gamecocks' first hit of the afternoon. West Georgia struck in the home half of the inning, scoring its first run of the contest.
After a scoreless second inning from both pitching staffs,
Amber Reed roped a double, bringing home
Emma Elrod to score in the third.
After entering the fourth frame leading 4-2, Jax State used six hits and five walks ro push across eight baserunners and take a 10-run advantage. Despite the offensive barrage,
Ashley Phillips and
Aria Davis were the lone Gamecocks to drive home a run with a hit.
The Gamecocks added two insurance runs in the fifth before Jax State starting pitcher
MacKinley Portillo closed out her afternoon with 5.0 innings, four hits and two earned runs.
Four Gamecocks finished their afternoon with multiple hits, including Phillips, who finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
The 16 runs scored by Jax State is the team's most runs scored in a contest since the Gamecocks defeated Charleston 20-9 on Feb. 16, 2020. Martin scored a team-high three runs on the evening.
With the win, Portillo moves to 4-1 on the season and now boasts a 1.91 ERA. All six Gamecock pitchers boast an ERA of 2.10 or better this season.
Jax State returns to Jana McGinnis Field on Wednesday against Alabama State at 5 p.m.
