GAMECOCK STORY LINES
• The weekend series between Jax State and Dallas Baptist will be the third weekend series the two clubs have faced each other and the first time DBU has traveled to Jax State. The Gamecocks visited Dallas during their 11-game road trip to start the 2017 season, due to the renovation of Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. The Patriots have won 4-of-the-6 previous games and claimed both weekend series. Last season, the two clubs played three one-run contests in Dallas. DBU edged Jax State, 10-9, in the opener before the Gamecocks bounced-back for a 12-11 win. The Patriots secured the series with a 5-4 win in the Sunday contest. In 2017, Jax State claimed the Friday night contest, 7-3, after plating all seven runs in the first inning. The Patriots bounced-back to win the next two games, 10-6 and 14-11. DBU is just the fourth team from the state of Texas that Jax State has ever faced and the first team from the Lone Star State to visit Jacksonville and play on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. The Gamecocks have faced Rice, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
• The Gamecocks begin the weekend as the one of the NCAA Division I Baseball leaders in triples. In the first 28 games, Jax State has collected 13 triples (all at home) and ranks 12th in the nation behind Arizona (20). Senior Drew Collins, redshirt sophomore Cooper Blauser and junior Caleb Johnson have three triples each.
• Junior Carson Hornung extended his on-base streak to 25 games with a pair of hits at Georgia State on Tuesday. Against the Owls, Hornung was 6-for-11 with four walks. Hornung has reached base via a walk 31 times, which leads CUSA entering the weekend. During the stretch of 25 games, Hornung is hitting .372 with 29 hits, three doubles and three home runs and posted 10 RBI. He has 26-of-his-31 walks during the streak and an on-base mark of .542.
• The Gamecocks were rewarded with a win via forfeit in the opening game of the twinbill against Liberty on Saturday, Match 29. For conference weekends in CUSA, each team is to submit a 27-man roster for the entire series. When Jax State came to the plate in the first inning, it was brought to the umpires attention that Liberty's starting pitcher was not on the 27-man roster that was turned in to the three-man crew prior to the start of the series on Friday, deeming the starting pitcher an ineligible player and the game ended in a forfeit in favor of the Gamecocks. There have been only five forfeits in Major League Baseball (MLB) since 1954; the last forfeit was in 1995, and prior to that, 1979. The 1995 MLB forfeit was between the Cardinals and the Dodgers on August 10, 1995. The Dodgers forfeited a home game vs. the Cardinals because of souvenir balls. NC State Wolfpack baseball team was disqualified from 2021 College World Series due to Covid-19 protocols after reaching the semifinals against Vanderbilt.
