GAMECOCK STORY LINES
• The weekend series with New Mexico State will be the second series all-time between the two Conference USA mates. Last season, the Aggies made the long trek to Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium and swept the Gamecocks. NM State doubled up Jax State, 8-4, in the opening game and scored five runs over the final four frames to break up a 4-4 deadlock. The Aggies completed the sweep on Sunday, 22-8. Jax State will be making its second trip ever to the state of New Mexico. The Gamecocks visited Albuquerque for a three-game series with the Lobos of New Mexico during the 2014 season. Las Cruces, New Mexico is 1,386 miles away from Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium, making this weekend's series the furthest west that Jax State has played a baseball game away from its home facility.
• The Gamecocks begin the weekend as the one of the NCAA Division I Baseball leaders in triples and stolen bases. In the first 36 games, Jax State has collected 13 triples (all at home) and ranks 20th in the nation behind Arizona (24). Senior Drew Collins, redshirt sophomore Cooper Blauser and junior Caleb Johnson have three triples each. Jax State also ranks in the NCAA Top-20 in stolen bases with 82 on the season. Last season the Gamecocks accumulated 92 total stolen bases. The trio of Collins, Blauser and Johnson have combined for 45-of-54 on the base paths.
• Junior Carson Hornung had his 27-game on-base streak snapped on Sunday against Dallas Baptist. It was the first game since February 25 at Alabama that he had not reached base. During that stretch of games, Hornung hit .365, including three home runs. He delivered 11 RBI and tallied 28 walks and three HBP. Hornung had nine multi-hit games during the streak. He enters the week leading CUSA with 33 walks, with 26 of those walks coming during the 27-game streak.
• The Gamecocks were rewarded with a win via forfeit in the opening game of the twinbill against Liberty on Saturday, Match 29. For conference weekends in CUSA, each team is to submit a 27-man roster for the entire series. When Jax State came to the plate in the first inning, it was brought to the umpires attention that Liberty's starting pitcher was not on the 27-man roster that was turned in to the three-man crew prior to the start of the series on Friday, deeming the starting pitcher an ineligible player and the game ended in a forfeit in favor of the Gamecocks. There have been only five forfeits in Major League Baseball (MLB) since 1954; the last forfeit was in 1995, and prior to that, 1979. The 1995 MLB forfeit was between the Cardinals and the Dodgers on August 10, 1995. The Dodgers forfeited a home game vs. the Cardinals because of souvenir balls. NC State Wolfpack baseball team was disqualified from 2021 College World Series due to Covid-19 protocols after reaching the semifinals against Vanderbilt.
