Gamecocks Open Series With Shutout of Toledo, 5-0

King posts career-high in RBI in victory

JACKSONVILLE — Trey King went 3-3 with three RBI and two doubles in a shutout victory over the Toledo Rockets on Friday night on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

Jax State improved to 3-2 on the young season, while Toledo dropped its third-straight contest to fall to 1-3.

Eli Pillsbury took his first victory of the season with five innings of scoreless ball, striking out six and only giving up two walks. Brady Sasse took his first loss to fall to 1-1 on the season after giving up three runs in six innings.

Neither team got on the board through the first two frames of action, but King put the Gamecocks on the board in the bottom of the third inning when he doubled down the right field line, plating Matthew Cash and Cooper Blauser to put Jax State up 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Cash singled to right field to drive Luke Williams home, adding a run to the total.

King's third RBI came in the bottom of the seventh inning, when an RBI-single to right drove Blauser home for the second time. The fifth run came in the bottom of the eighth, when Williams scored Ace Williamson to make it 5-0, the eventual final.

Jax State's pitching staff pitched its second shutout in its previous three games, first shutting out Cincinnati 1-0 last Sunday, then the 5-0 win tonight. In its previous 29 innings of pitching, the Gamecock pitching staff has only allowed two runs.

Cooper Blauser logged his first hit of the season tonight, going one-for-two from the plate with two runs scored. His first hit of the season was a double just fair of the right field line.

The Gamecocks will look to win their first series of the season on Saturday with the middle game against Toledo. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Jim Case Stadium.
