Mya Barnes had a huge night for Jacksonville State women's basketball in a 66-64 loss Thursday night at UTEP.
Barnes finished the game with a 20-point, 15 rebound double-double for her eighth double-double of the season and her third in three-straight games. Barnes was efficient shooting 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-9 from three. Meanwhile,
Brooklyn McDaniel had another great game scoring with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, and four boards.
Makala Hobdy added 10 points on 4-of-6 from the floor, four rebounds, and three assists coming off the bench.
Kyera Thornsbury had a team-high four assists.
The Gamecocks (13-15, 7-9) lost an eight-point advantage in the last three minutes of the contest to fall to the Miners (13-13, 5-10). UTEP went on a 10-0 scoring run to close out the game.
Hobdy made it a 64-56 Jax State advantage with 2:45 left in regulation. UTEP answered the Gamecock bucket with a three to make it 64-59. With 1:22 left to play, UTEP cut the Gamecocks' lead to 64-51 with a putback layup.
With only 53 seconds left on the clock, a UTEP three tied the game at 66-64. Later, UTEP knocked down the game-winning shot with only four seconds remaining in the game.
The Gamecocks went up 11-8 at the midway point of the first quarter, but by the end of the first UTEP was leading 17-16. Barnes had 10 of her rebounds in the first 10 minutes of play. By halftime, the Gamecocks were up 30-28.
Jax State led 38-36 with 4:04 left in the third, then by the end of the third, Jax State was up 42-38. Hobdy extended the Gamecock lead to 56-45 with 6:10 left in the fourth. Jax State led 58-53 by the 4:50 mark in the final period.
Jax State moves on to face New Mexico State Saturday at 3 p.m. central (2 p.m. mountain) on the road.
