Jax State picked up a pair of wins at the Louisiana Classic with a walk-off single to beat North Texas 7-6 and closed the day with a 9-7 win over Louisiana.
The opening game of the day started slowly for Jax State, as the Gamecocks found themselves down 4-0 in the third inning after North Texas posted a pair of runs in the second and third innings, including back-to-back solo home runs in the third frame.
Having to play from behind, Jax State chipped away at the deficit in the bottom half of the third, tallying one score to make it a three-run game.
Continuing the effort, the Gamecocks blew the game wide open in the fifth frame after posting four runs thanks to an RBI double from
Maddie Mayo, then followed by a three-RBI double by
Ashley Phillips to take a 5-4 lead.
Jax State added another run in the sixth to have a two-run cushion going into the seventh that was eventually squandered by the Mean Green after an RBI triple and a fielder's choice ground ball tied the contest up.
Facing extra innings for the second time in its first three games, Jax State ended the game in regulation after
Makalyn Kyser was able to rip a single down the right field line to score
Aria Davis and walk it off in game one.
Phillips led the scoring effort for the Gamecocks, going 1-for-3 on the day with three RBIs and a sacrifice bunt. Mayo also played a significant role in the contest, going 1-for-1 with two RBIs, including a sacrifice fly.
In the contest against Louisiana,
Kailey Martin's fifth RBI of the weekend came in the top of the first with a productive groundout to score
Emma Elrod to grab the early lead. UL answered with a pair of homers in the bottom of the inning to fall behind 3-1.
Jax State answered with two in the second with a run scoring on a throwing error, then a groundout by Elrod produced a run to tie the game.
The Ragin' Cajuns regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a bases-loaded walk but the Gamecocks again answered with Elrod doubling home
Mikayla Deville in the top of the fourth. The Gamecocks regained the lead in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch, then an RBI groundout by Tea' Gutierrez pushed the advantage to two.
Mayo broke the game open with a two-run homer to left in the top of the sixth and Deville picked up an RBI single to second for a 9-4 lead.
The hosts picked up a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to two, but a flyout to left ended the game.
