JACKSONVILLE – Gamecocks women's tennis dominated Lee University Saturday afternoon on the Jax State Tennis Courts in a 7-0 victory.
The Gamecocks started the winning momentum by capturing the doubles point to go up 1-0 early in the match.
Sae Kaneko and
Angeles Rodriguez-Rizo cruised to a 6-0 win on doubles court three. On court two,
Irene Artigas and
Isabella Sambola defeated Lee's Aliyah Dwyer and Maria Duarte 6-2.
Jax State's
Polina Ramenskaja and
Alba Roche were beaten 6-3 by Andrea Pascual and Rima Yoshida, but the Gamecocks were still able to win the doubles point thanks to the results on courts two and three.
In singles, all but one Jax State athlete won in straight-sets. Ramenskaja, who played on court one, defeated Yoshida 6-2, 6-1. On court two, Artigas won 6-4, 6-1, while on court four, Rodriguez-Rizo won 6-1, 6-2. Kaneko earned a 6-3, 6-0 triumph on court five, and
Emma Montagner downed Nicolette Fuhr 6-1, 6-2.
Sambola and Pascual played the lone singles match that went three sets on court three. Sambola took the first set 6-2, before Pascual won the second 6-2. With the match down to the determinate third set, Sambola was able to scratch out a 10-6 win to give Jax State the match victory.
Women's tennis is back in action Tuesday, Feb. 10, against North Alabama. The match between the in-state rivals is set for a 1:30 p.m. start at the Jax State Tennis Courts.
