DALLAS—Jax State had three women's tennis athletes honored by Conference USA for their performances during a 4-0 week.
Senior
Irene Artigas was named the Women's Tennis Athlete of the week and the tandem of
Polina Ramenskaja and
Aneka Patel were selected as the league's Doubles Team of the Week.
Artigas went 4-0 in singles on the week without dropping a set, playing in the No. 3 slot. Against EKU on March 4, Artigas won 6-0, 5-0 versus Marilou Cote and was a 6-1, 6-0 winner the next day against Victoria Zarate of Cumberlands. In the home match against Murray State on March 7, Artigas defeated Sofia Issakova of Murray State 6-2, 6-1. The native of Valencia, Spain wrapped up the week Tennessee State's Victoria Cooksey 6-0, 6-1 on the road.
Artigas has impressed this season with an 8-1 singles record and helped Jax State to a 38-24 mark in singles as a team this season.
Ramenskaja and Patel are coming off a 4-0 week as well. Against Eastern Kentucky they downed Anastas Cherniakova and Masha Fedenko 6-2. Patel, a sophomore from London and Ramenskaja, a senior from Narva, Estonia defeated Cumberlands' Mahiro Hara and Yu Fang Liu 6-2. In the home match versus Murray State, the Gamecocks' duo beat the Racers' Yuna Kadowaki and Yu Kikawa 6-4.
The Jax State pair then wrapped up the week at Tennessee State with a 6-1 win over Victoria Cooksey and Claudia Murdasanu to improve to 7-1 as a team with six consecutive wins.
The Gamecocks are now 9-4 on the season and will be back in action next Wednesday at UAB at 1 p.m.
