JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Jax State softball wrapped up its second series of conference play on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 7-1 to conclude a three-game sweep, along with its fifth straight win.
The Gamecocks (20-8, 5-1 CUSA) claimed their second-highest margin of victory so far in conference play in the win, along with tallying their ninth victory at Jana McGinnis Field this season.
Through the weekend series, Jax State outscored Western Kentucky 16-3 across three games, marking the Hilltoppers lowest scoring output in a three-game stretch this season.
It took until the third inning before the Gamecocks could start its offensive onslaught, which included an RBI double by
Emma Elrod for the first score, followed by an attempted sacrifice bunt by
Makalyn Kyser that resulted in a dropped tag at the plate to score two more.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Hilltoppers fought back in the fifth with an RBI single, but could not bring anyone else home despite a bases-loaded opportunity.
Holding a 3-1 lead in the sixth, the Gamecocks added another four insurance runs in the sixth inning, kicked off by
Chaney Peters pinch-hit RBI single into right field for the first score.
From there, the rally continued in the inning, including an RBI single by
Haleigh Cushingberry, who later scored after
Kailey Martin blasted her first triple of the season off the right field wall.
Finishing off her complete game performance, pitcher
Makenna Moore forced Western Kentucky to go three up, three down, to secure her sixth win of the season. Moore allowed just one run off five hits and two walks, along with picking up seven strikeouts on the day.
Elrod led the Gamecocks at the dish going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base as well. Additionally,
Morgan Nowakowski,
Ashley Phillips, Martin, Peters and Cushingberry were each responsible for one hit apiece.
After playing its last four games at home, Jax State will hit the road once more and head south to take on the Auburn Tigers on Wednesday, March 18, at 6 p.m.
