Gamecocks Shut Out WKU, Sweep Hilltoppers on Sunday

Jax State remains CUSA's only undefeated with series sweep

JACKSONVILLE — Jax State pitched its third shutout of the season as the Gamecocks swept Western Kentucky with a 10-0 run-rule victory on Sunday afternoon at Jim Case Stadium.

The victory propelled Jax State to 21-4 this season and 6-0 in Conference USA play, now the only undefeated team in the league.The Hilltoppers fell to 13-11 and 3-3 in league play.

Steven Cash earned his second win of the season with four innings of scoreless pitching, only giving up two hits and striking out six. WKU starter Zach Serup was tagged with the loss after getting chased after a third of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits.

The first three runs of the game came in the bottom of the first inning and on one swing of the bat, as Cooper Blauser got a hold of a ball and sent it 378 feet to left field, scoring Jaxon Pate and Caleb Johnson with him.

For the next four innings, both sides traded zeros on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the sixth, the Gamecocks plated another three runs, starting with a line-out sac fly from Trey King to score Grayson Ashe. Ace Williamson reached on a bunt single, allowing Matthew Cash to come home and score. To close the scoring, Luke Williams played Trey Majette on a sac fly to bump the lead up to 6-0.

Leading by the same score in the bottom of the eighth inning, Williamson walked with one out and Pate walked with two outs to get two on, followed by Johnson getting hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Blauser tallied his third hit of the day with a two-RBI double to make it 8-0, as well as giving him a five RBI day. Ashe called game with a follow-up two-RBI double, ending the game earning Jax State's fourth run-rule victory of the season and second in CUSA play.

Blauser and M. Cash both went 3-for-5 on the day, with Blauser tallying a single, double, and a homer, a triple shy of the cycle. 

Jax State will play the next four on the road, taking on UAB in Birmingham on Tuesday at 5 p.m. before traveling to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech for a CUSA series starting on Friday, March 27.
