JACKSONVILLE – Women's tennis beat Western Kentucky 4-1 at home Friday afternoon for their second consecutive win. The team improved to 12-5 on the season and 6-3 at the Jax State Tennis Courts with the victory.
In doubles,
Irene Artigas and
Sae Kaneko paired up to get the first win of the day for the Gamecocks with their 6-3 triumph over WKU's Isabelle Einess and Elizabeth Sobieski on doubles court three. On court two,
Emma Montagner and
Alba Roche were beaten by Ariadna Fernandez and Barbara Olvera by a score of 6-2, leaving the doubles to be determined on court one.
On court one,
Polina Ramenskaja and
Aneka Patel were able to capture the doubles point for Jax State when they defeated Virginia Madueno and Emily Schut 6-4.
In singles, Patel put the Gamecocks up 2-0 with her straight-set win over Schut on court two. Patel took the first set 6-4, then claimed the second 6-1. Kaneko continued her impressive freshman campaign with a win on court six over Sobieski thanks to a 6-3 first set win and a 6-0 blanking in the second set.
With the Gamecocks at match point, WKU got on the board when Olvera downed
Isabella Sambola 6-1, 6-2 on court four. Ramenskaja clinched the match victory on court one with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set triumph over Einess.
Artigas dropped her first set 6-4 to Madueno on court three, but she was leading 4-1 in the second when the match was unfinished thanks to Jax State clinching the win. On court five, Montagner won her first set 6-4 against Fernandez. Montagner was trailing 1-0 in the second set when the match was abandoned.
Next up, Jax State travels to Kennesaw State on Friday, April 10, for a 9 a.m. central first-serve.
