HUNTSVILLE, Texas—The Jax State bats broke out in a big way late to come away with a 9-1 win at Sam Houston to improve to 40-13 and 22-3 in Conference USA.
The Gamecocks left the bases loaded in the second and were held to one hit through the first three innings which was a double to left in the third by Amber Reed to extend her reached-base streak to 30 in a row during a two-hit night.
In the fourth, Emma Elrod came up to bat with the bases loaded and two outs and worked a 10-pitch at bat into a bases-clearing double to start the scoring.
That was plenty of run support for senior starting pitcher Jaliyah Holmes, who allowed just one run over six innings of work to ear her 16th win of the season.
Jax State answered a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single down the right field line by Makayln Kyser, and an RBI double by Ashley Phillips to take a 5-1 advantage in the fifth. Mikayla Deville then doubled to center field to bring home two more with two outs. Elrod then came through with her fourth RBI of the game with a single to center field to bring home Deville.
In the seventh, Kyser smashed a solo shot well beyond the left field wall to give the Gamecocks an eight-run advantage and her second hit of the night.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday to wrap up the series.
