JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Coming off its second conference loss of the year the night before, Jax State softball faced its second rubber match opportunity of league play and came out on top once again, defeating the New Mexico State Aggies 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Jana McGinnis Field.
The Gamecocks (29-11, 13-2 CUSA) controlled both sides of the ball throughout the contest, going 11-for-28 (.393) at the plate compared to the Aggies' 2-for-25 (.080) effort, along with allowing just six baserunners throughout the whole game.
Jax State has won all five conference series as it continues to hold a first-place position in Conference USA. Additionally, the Gamecocks move to 15-2 on their home field this season, winning nine of their last ten games at Jana McGinnis Field.
After allowing the opponent to score in the first inning the last two games, Jax State returned the favor this time around, plating the first run of the game in the opening frame after Emma Elrod scored on a passed ball soon after her leadoff ground rule double.
However, it would be a battle for the lead through the next three innings, as the Aggies scored their first run in the top of the second which then prompted an RBI single by the Gamecocks in the bottom of the third to retake the lead. Then, New Mexico State plated another in the fourth to make it a 2-2 game at the midpoint.
Following the second tie of the game, Elrod broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run blast out to left field to put her squad ahead 5-2 in the closing innings. The home run was Elrod's first since March 25 against Alabama and the fourth of this season.
Jax State wasn't done yet in the scoring category though, as the Gamecocks added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, via an RBI single by Morgan Nowakowski.
Freshman Makenna Moore was the victor in the circle, tallying her 11th win of the season and seventh win of conference play, which ties for first place in the league. Moore allowed two runs off a pair of hits, two walks and an error while retiring her last nine straight batters in a row. The freshman arm picked up eight strikeouts throughout the day in her seven innings of action, which is the fourth time this season she has achieved that total.
Elrod was the team's leader at the dish, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs off of her home run, along with a double as well. The performance was Elrod's second three-hit day of the season and seventh of her career. Alongside the junior outfielder was Aria Davis and Nowakowski who each tallied two base hits and an RBI each against the Aggies.
Jax State will hit the road once again after playing its last four games at home. This time, the Gamecocks will travel to Atlanta to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (22-20, 7-10 ACC) on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. at Shirley Clements Mewborn Field.
