Gamecocks Wrap up Day Two of Conference USA Outdoor Championships

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Jax State track and field program put together a solid showing in day two of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships at the Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Chaci Whitfield and Aliyah Gidharry finished up their heptathlon performances with the long jump, javelin throw and the 800m to begin the morning. Gidharry had the best performance of the day from the pair in the javelin throw, where she tossed the implement 39.31m for a second-place finish in the event.

In the overall standings of the heptathlon, Gidharry placed eighth with 4,637 points, which was a personal best, with Whitfield trailing just behind with a 12th place finish with 4,324 points which was also a personal best.

In the field, senior Lennon Ibsen finished up her collegiate career in the pole vault by placing 8th at a height of 3.75m which was a season-high and was just enough to earn a point for the team's overall score.

"Clearing a season's best of 3.75m (12-3.5) on the final day of her career with her family watching for the last time made the whole season worth it for Lennon [Ibsen]," assistant coach Kevin Keane said. "The challenges of pole selections with various pole lengths, flex ratings, grip heights, wind conditions and new event coach this season certainly had us guessing along the way. In the end, our senior stepped up and went out a CUSA point scorer once again in a field full of talented vaulters."

In the other field event of the day was junior Jadyn Bonds who placed eighth in the high jump, achieving a height of 1.65m to also earn a point for the team.

In the 800m, the Gamecocks had three athletes competing, including Charity Mabuza, Claudia Marquez and Rania Yousef Moreno. Mabuza took home the highest finish of the team at 10th place, with a time of 2:11.65. Marquez and Yousef Moreno finished 12th and 21st, respectively.
"We had chances to make finals in the 800," head coach Jeremy Provence said. "It's a little disappointing that we did not get anyone through. We have a young group and will use this as a learning experience."

Lastly was the 3000m steeplechase in which Jax State had a pair of representatives, including Faith Kurgoi and Selina Planken. The freshmen duo finished back-to-back in 12th and 13th place, with 11:03.79 and 11:17.12 times, respectively.

Jax State will wrap up the conference championship meet tomorrow afternoon, beginning with the javelin throw at 1:00 p.m.
