MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Jax State track and field program set three new school records, along with bringing home a medal on the final day of competition at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
"The energy and effort were there today," head coach
Jeremy Provence said. "The team competed hard, and we had some great results because of it."
The Gamecocks set its new program highs in the 4x100m relay, the 100m hurdles and the 5000m to finish off the outdoor season with a few highlights. Jax State finished the meet in 12
th place with 21 total points as a team.
"We are disappointed in the team result, but encouraged in the progress we have made this season," Provence said. "CUSA is a competitive conference, and it has challenged everyone to stay focused and bring a hard-working mentality every day."
The 4x100m relay squad consisting of
Amiyah Johnson,
Cheyenne Hill,
Jailah Loving and
Ella-Grace Edwards blitzed down the track at a time of 45.06 seconds to claim a third-place finish, along with their school record. The performance was enough to earn six points for the team total.
"Really proud of the 4x100m relay group," Provence said. "They have improved all season, but to set the school record and podium at the biggest meet of the year is a great accomplishment."
In the 100m hurdles, freshman Hill was back in action again and finished off her first collegiate season by beating her own school record in the event, finishing in 13.71 seconds which earned a fourth-place finish and five points for the team total.
"Cheyenne [Hill] had a tough double, but performed very well in the relay and the 100 hurdles," Provence said. "She is one of the best young hurdlers in the conference. It will be fun to watch her continue to improve and compete for a conference championship over the next few years."
In distance running, sophomore
Viola Jepleting had the team's best finish of the day, placing eighth in the 1500m final at a time of 4:27.67. Soon after in the 5000m, the Gamecocks were represented by Jepleting, Faith Kurgoi and
Naum Kibiwott who placed 11
th, 24
th and 26
th, respectively. Jepleting finished with a time of 17:10.46 which broke her previous school record.
"Viola is another individual who had a busy day," Provence said. "She was able to score a point in a very competitive 1500m race. Two hours later, she came up just short of more points in the 5k, but was able to hang on for the school record."
Additionally, Jax State had solid performances in the javelin throw to open up the day, courtesy of
Aliyah Gidharry and
Jadyn Bonds. Both athletes made it to the finals in the event and Bonds led the duo with a fifth-place finish, achieving a toss of 45.24m. Gidharry finished in 9
th place with a 41.48m distance.
"For the second year in a row, Jadyn [Bonds] was down to her last throw and found a way to score big points for the team," Provence said. "She is a phenomenal competitor."
Finally, to round out the final event of the night, the 4x400m relay squad of
Charity Mabuza,
Emma Drinkard, Claudia Marquez and
Amber Bailey managed to win their heat with a time of 3:46.33 and finished eighth overall.
"Our underclassmen have really stepped up this season," Provence said. "There is a lot to be excited about moving forward, especially with the group we have joining the team this fall."
