Volleyball Takes on Two In-State Rivals Saturday and Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Jax State volleyball is prepped for a pair of in-state rivalry matches against North Alabama and Samford Saturday and Sunday. The matches are at the Samford invitational at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.
The Gamecocks take on UNA Saturday at 4 p.m., then face the hosting Bulldogs Sunday at 2 p.m.
Jax State volleyball is coming off an 0-4 weekend at the annual Blue Ridge Classic in Asheville, North Carolina. The Gamecocks fell 3-1 against Seton Hall, 3-2 against Bellarmine, 3-1 against Western Carolina, and 3-0 versus UNC Asheville.
Jax State had Azavia Thomas make the Blue Ridge Classic All-Tournament Team after a productive weekend in North Carolina. Thomas tallied 51 kills on 3.19 kills per set and a .350 hitting percentage. She also had 14 total blocks and five digs across 16 sets played.
Claire Evans actually led the way offensively for the Gamecocks with 52 kills on 3.25 kills per set on a .215 hitting percent. Evans added 21 digs across the four matches on 1.31 digs per set and totaled three service aces.
Sofia Varela had a team best 88 assists on 5.50 assists per set, while Addison Stone had 62 assists on 3.88 assists per set. Delaney Moon led the way with 33 digs on 2.06 digs per set, while Reese Tiesing followed closely with 31 digs on 2.07 digs per set.
UNA is currently sitting at 8-0 on the year and has yet to lose a set in a contest. The Lions are coming off a 3-0 sweep of Tennessee State on Sep. 8. Meanwhile, Samford is 1-4 thus far. Most recently, Samford fell 3-0 at Vanderbilt on Sep. 6.
Jax State leads the series against Samford 20-11 dating back to both teams' Division II days. Jax State is 38-39 all-time against UNA including the Division II era.
