PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Jacksonville State junior
Erik Jansson continued his impressive run on the golf course in this week's Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate.
The Gamecocks' No. 1 player used three rounds under par for the second-straight tournament to tie for fifth out of 96 players and finish in the Top 10 for the fourth time in as many tournaments this spring.
A native of Vasteras, Sweden, Jansson carded rounds of 70-71-70 on the par-72, 6,989-yard True Blue Golf Course, finishing with a 5-under score of 211 in the three-day, 54-hole tournament. He was just four shots behind medalist Jared Nelson of Connecticut.
He runs his streak of consecutive rounds under par to seven and has signed for a score better than par in nine of his 12 rounds in the spring semester. He runs his season scoring average to 71.67, thanks to a 70.25 average since play began in the spring semester in early February.
In this week's AGT Intercollegiate, Janssen was consistent across the board, playing True Blue's par-3 holes at 2-under par and torching the par-5s with a 4-under total. He tied for third in the field with 14 birdies.
He helped the Gamecocks to a 10
th-place finish in the 18-team event, turning in rounds of 290-287-298 for a 54-hole score of 875. Troy won the event, finishing ahead of Delaware.
Senior
Ross Napier finished his 54 holes with a 1-over 27 to tie for 22
nd in the event. The native of Hartselle, Ala., opened his tournament with a 2-under 70 on Monday and followed that up with a 74 on Tuesday and a Wednesday 73. He was also 2-under on the par-three holes on the course, tying Jansson for the second-best mark in the field.
Sophomore
Santiago Bailleres used an impressive second round to bolster his 54-hole score of 221 that tied him for 39
th. The Carrientes, Argentina, native shot a second-round 69 between an opening 74 and a closing 78 to account for his score. He used a birdie streak in Tuesday's round, carding birdies on five of the final six holes on the front nine to turn at 4-under. He birdied the par-5 fourth hole from in the water hazard, getting up-and-down after removing his shoes and getting in the water to hit his third shot.
Sophomore
Jackson Bowman tied for 79
th in his Jax State debut, signing for rounds of 76-73-80 to shoot 229, while redshirt freshman Richardo Matho finished 96
th with a 238 after turning in rounds of 81-80-77.
The Gamecocks will return to the course quickly, traveling to Snow Hill, N.C., for Elon's Cutter Creek Intercollegiate that will begin on Friday. They will play their practice round at the Cutter Creek Golf Club on Thursday.
