JACKSONVILLE – Freshman Calvin Middleton's three-yard touchdown run with 13 seconds to play erased a one-point deficit and lifted the Jacksonville State football team to a 26-21 win over No. 18 Tennessee State on Senior Day Saturday at Paul Snow Stadium.
Middleton's second touchdown run of the day capped an 84-yard game winning drive that took 14 plays and 5:25 seconds. It gave the Gamecocks (8-3, 6-2 Ohio Valley Conference) their second win over a ranked foe this season and secured a second-place tie in the OVC standings. They improve to 4-1 against the Tigers (8-3, 5-2 OVC) in teh all-time series.
JSU finished the season with a 5-0 record at Paul Snow Stadium, just the second time since 1992 the Gamecocks have posted a perfect home record. It was also the first time JSU defeated more than one ranked opponent in a season since moving to Division I prior to the 1993 season.
Jacksonville State had 293 yards of total offense on the day, 174 on the ground and 119 passing. Senior Daniel Jackson rushed for 105 yards on 17 carries, marking his third straight 100-yard performance and the sixth of his career. Junior Ryan Perrilloux completed 13-of-21 passes for 119 yards and rushed for 50 yards on 11 attempts.
Tennessee State struck first with 5:42 left in the first quarter when Antonio Heffner hooked up with JuJuan Stillman for a 63-yard touchdown pass to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
The Tigers appeared poised to add to their lead late in the first quarter, but Eric Benson's 30-yard field goal attempt was blocked by JSU's T.J. Heath and scooped up by Andrew Ridgeway, who raced 72-yards for the touchdown. Gavin Hallford added the PAT to tie the game at 7-7 with 1:25 left in the first quarter.
Tennessee State pushed the lead to 14-7 early in the second quarter after Dante Thomas scored on a one-yard run, a score that was set up by Marquez Hall's interception of a Perrilloux pass.
Despite having just 47 yards of total offense before starting the ensuing drive, the Gamecocks took the possession 74 yards in seven plays to tie the game at 14-14. Middleton capped the drive with the one-yard run and Hallford added the extra-point with 1:31 left in the first half.
The Jax State defense held and forced a Tennessee State punt and Perrilloux marched the Gamecocks down to the Tigers 30-yard line to set up a 48-yard field goal by Hallford. The senior's career-long field goal sailed through the uprights as time expired and gave the Gamecocks a 17-14 lead at the half.
Hallford began the second half's scoring with a 36-yard field goal to extend the Gamecock lead to 20-14 with 8:58 left in the third quarter. The All-American kicker finished the game with 311 career points, adding to his JSU record and moving him into second on the OVC's career scoring list. The kick was the 50th successful field goal of the Phenix City, Ala., native's career.
Tennessee State took the lead early in the fourth quarter, when a Thomas fumble rolled into the endzone, where Brandon Belvin fell on it for tthe touchdown. Benson's point after gave the Tigers a 21-20 lead with 11:35 to play.
After two possession changes, the Gamecocks took over on their own 16-yard line with 5:38 remaining and mounted the game winning drive.
Tennessee State totaled 347 yards on the afternoon, 177 rushing and 170 passing. Heffner had 225 yards of total offense, completing 11-of-23 passes for 170 yard and a touchdown and rushing 17 times for 55 yards.
Junior linebacker Alexander Henderson led JSU with 14 tackles, the third time in teh last four games the Mobile, Ala., native has recorded double figures in tackles. He also ran his season total to 103 tackles, making him the first JSU player to record 100 tackles in a season since Natarsha James had 111 in 2000.
Jacksonville State now plays the waiting game to see it gains an at-large berth into the NCAA FCS playoffs. Selections will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 23.
